The African thrush ( Turdus pelios ) is a songbird from the thrush family (Turdidae).

description

The grayish-brown bird, with light breast feathers and light orange side plumage, has a yellow beak and dark gray iris rings . The African thrush reaches a body length of 25 centimeters and a weight of up to 86 grams.

The following subspecies have been described:

  • Turdus pelios adamauae
  • Turdus pelios bocagei : Western DR Congo and NW & W Angola.
  • Turdus pelios centralis : East Congo and Central African Republic, East to South Ethiopia, West Kenya and NW Tanzania.
  • Turdus pelios chiguancoides : East Senegal to South Burkina Faso, extreme SW Niger and northern Ghana.
  • Turdus pelios graueri : Eastern DR Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Western Tanzania.
  • Turdus pelios nigrilorum : Cameroon Mountain (Cameroon).
  • Turdus pelios pelios : East Cameroon, East to South Sudan, South Sudan, West Eritrea and West, Central & East Ethiopia.
  • Turdus pelios poensis : Bioko
  • Turdus pelios saturatus : West Ghana, East to Central Cameroon, West Congo and Gabon.
  • Turdus pelios stormsi : Southeast DR Congo, East Angola and North Zambia.
  • Turdus pelios williami

habitat

The African thrush lives in wooded areas south of the Sahara . It can be found in all types of wooded habitats including forest edge, riparian forest, woody planting, parks and gardens.

nutrition

The African thrush is an omnivore and feeds mainly on berries and fruits , but also worms and insects .

Reproduction

The African thrush breeds individually, nor does it form swarms. The female lays one to three eggs , which are incubated for about two weeks before the young birds hatch.
