The Afuera Islands are a group of three small islands north of Challenger Island and immediately opposite the southern access point to Hughes Bay off the west coast of West Antarctic Graham Land .
They were mapped by the French polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot on the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910). The name of the islands first appeared on maps of the Argentine government in 1957 and was probably given descriptively on the basis of their location on Hughes Bay; the Spanish afuera means something like “outside”.
