Age-Uke , also Jodan-Age-Uke (Japanese 上 段 上 げ 受 け; 上 段 = upper level, 上 げ 受 け = ascending block) is a basic block technique in karate that can be used to repel attacks against the head ( Jōdan ). The attack is blocked by moving the arm upwards with the wrist or the lower forearm. The Age-Uke is not only available in the Kata or Kihon , it is also a standard defense in Kumite to protect the head area.

Execution in the Kihon

In Kihon, an Age-Uke is performed as follows:

  • Backward movement : the blocking arm is in the hikite position, i.e. H. on the side of the hip; the fist is closed. The other arm is extended towards the opponent's head with an open hand. The hips point straight ahead.
  • Block movement : The blocking arm moves vertically upwards over the middle of the body. The elbow remains bent to 90 ° and moves close to the body as directly as possible towards its end position. The muscles of the arm remain relaxed. The reaching arm is withdrawn and the hand is clenched into a fist.
  • End position : Just above forehead height, the palm of the blocking fist turns up and forward, the arm is almost (but not completely) horizontal and about two hand's breadth in front of the forehead. In the final position, the muscles of the arm are tense and give it stability. The reaching arm moves into the hikite position and the hip rotates in (hanmi).

Application in the kata

In the kata, the swinging movement is modified in such a way that the swinging arm is no longer stretched, but used as an age-uke with an open hand. This can also be interpreted as Torite's grasping movement . Often, e.g. B. in the Kata Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan , this gripping of the attacking arm is followed by another, offensively used Age-Uke, with which the arm of the attacker is broken.

In Shōtōkan karate, the age-uke occurs in the following kata:
