Heian Nidan ( Japanese 平安 二段 , dt. Peace, second level ) is a kata in karate . It is the second of the Heian Katas or under its older name Pinan Shodan (Japanese 平安 初段 , dt. Peace, initial stage ) the first of the Pinan series. The Karateka they learned right after Heian Shodan (Pinan Nidan). This kata was originally the first in the series, but Funakoshi Gichin changed the order because it is more difficult to learn compared to the Heian Shodan.

Here the Kata Heian Nidan from the Shōtōkan style is described. This corresponds (apart from style differences) to the Kata Pinan Shodan z. B. in Wadō-Ryū , however, the Pinan Nidan in Kyokushinkai . The Kata Pinan Nidan can either correspond to the Kata Heian Nidan or the Heian Shodan , depending on the style .

The kata consists of 26 movements and lasts about 40 seconds. Compared to Heian Shodan, it already contains more difficult techniques, such as Yoko-Geri Keage (lateral snapped kick) and Mae-Geri (kick forward), Nukite (fingertip kick ) and Morote Uchi- (Ude) -uke (one block from the inside towards you Outside). A central element of this kata is the change between different postures and hip positions: there are very frequent changes between forward and backward positions ( Zenkutsu dachi / Kōkutsu dachi ), as well as over-turned hip positions ( Gyaku hanmi ) for the first time in the two Uchi uke block techniques.
