The Bunka-chō ( Japanese 文化 庁 , Office for Cultural Affairs , English Agency for Cultural Affairs ) belongs as a special office to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology . It was established on June 15, 1968 to promote arts and culture in Japan. Since 2016 the office and the 231 employees (2017) have been headed by Miyata Ryōhei.

The tasks include in detail: to promote artistic creation, the protection and preservation of cultural goods, the protection of copyrights, measures to improve and spread the Japanese language, to promote international cultural exchange and to act as an administration for religion. The Office's budget in 2016 was 103.96 million yen; it rose 0.3% to 104.27 million yen in 2017.

The characters for the Bunka-chō were designed by the calligrapher Naruse Eizan.

history

On August 29, 1950, the “ Cultural Property Protection Act ” ( 文化 財 保護 法 , Bunkazai Hōgohō ) came into force and the “Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property” ( 文化 財 保護 委員会 , Bunkazai Hōgoiinkai ) was established as a special office of the “Ministry of Culture”. The education and monument protection departments of the Ministry of Culture were abolished.

In May 1966, after sixteen years of activity, the committee was reassigned as an internal department to the "Ministry of Culture". Two years later, in 1968, the office received its current special status.
