Angenor de Oliveira , better known under the name Cartola (born October 11, 1908 in Rio de Janeiro ; † November 30, 1980 ibid) is considered one of the most important samba composers in the history of Brazilian music. His most famous compositions include "As Rosas nicht Falam" (The roses do not speak) and "O Mundo É um Moinho"

Life

around 1920

Cartola was born in Rio de Janeiro in the Catete district , but he grew up in the Laranjeiras district . The young Angenor enjoyed music at an early age and learned to play the guitar and the cavaquinho from his father. Financial difficulties forced the family to move to the then emerging Mangueira favela . There he soon made friends with the children of the neighborhood, including Carlos Cachaça, who is 6 years his senior . After his mother died, he left school at the age of 15 and found work as a construction worker. In order to protect himself from the falling dirt, he began to wear a bowler hat, whereupon he was nicknamed "Cartola" by his colleagues.

In 1923 Cartola founded the Bloco dos Arengueiros together with befriended sambistas from Mangueira, from which the Bloco Estação Primeira de Mangueira (later Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Estação Primeira de Mangueira ) emerged in 1928 . For her first move, Cartola composed the samba "Chega de demanda". In the 30s his compositions were popular with singers of the time such as B. Aracy de Almeida , Carmen Miranda , Francisco Alves , Mário Reis and Sílvio Caldas made famous on the radio. In 1974 Cartola recorded the first of his four solo LPs, which made him known to a wider public and started his career with classics such as "As Rosas haben Falam", "O Mundo É um Moinho", "Acontece", "O Sol Nascerá" ( with Elton Medeiros), "Quem Me Vê Sorrindo" (with Carlos Cachaça), "Cordas de Aço", "Alvorada" and "Alegria" give a new impetus. At the end of the 1970s, Cartola moved into a house in the Jacarepaguá district, where he lived until his death in 1980.
