Agios Georgios (Lasithi)

Agios Georgios is a village in the Lasithi plateau on the Greek island of Crete . It has 490 inhabitants and is the second largest village on the plateau, until 1970 it was the largest village in Lasithi County. The name of the village is derived from the holy St. George ( Agios Georgios ).

The community has a primary school, a kindergarten, a pharmacy, several smaller hotels and an agrotourism facility, the Lasinthos Eco Park. Sights include a folklore museum and the Eleftherios Venizelos museum.

From the village you can hike up Mount Dikti . First you reach the Limnakaro plateau and then the summit Spathi at 2148  m altitude . In the middle of the village runs the European long-distance path E4 , which leads from Kastelli to Kato Zakros.

Wind turbines at Agios Georgios

There are interesting caves on the Lasithi plateau, such as the Zeus cave in Psychro and the smaller Apostolis cave (Σπήλαιο του Αποστόλη) in Agios Georgios. The plateau is famous for its numerous wind turbines that were used to irrigate the fields.
