history

During excavations in the 1960s, a late Bronze Age settlement came to light.

During the Ottoman period (1570 / 71-1878) population censuses were carried out for the purpose of collecting taxes. Therefore, only the (male) heads of household were counted. In Altınova there were exactly 32 inhabitants in 1831, all but one of whom were considered Turks.

When the British took over in 1878, their census in 1891 resulted in 132 Turkish and four Greek residents. In 1901 there were no more Greeks in the village, only 135 Turks. In the following censuses, the population stagnated between 196 (1911) and 194 (1921), increasing to 211 by 1931. There were 14 Greeks counted in 1911, but only one in each of the two following censuses. From 1946 at the latest, the number of Turkish villagers rose to 307, in 1960 even to 365, while the Greeks disappeared from the Turkish enclave. No Greeks have lived in the village since then. In 1964, the village, which was the outpost of the enclave, received many Turkish refugees from Arnadi / Kuzucuk, Boğaztepe / Monarga and Sygkrasi / Sınıüstü. In 1970, however, only the original inhabitants lived in Altınova, none of whom had to flee. Their number was estimated at around 400 in 1971; in 1978 there were 374.

Since then, the place has mainly lost the younger ones. In 1996 there were only 255 inhabitants, in 2006 it had only 250, in 2011 there were 229.
