Agisala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to older research, Agisala was an architect and builder. According to old readings, his name appears in a Kharoshthi inscription on the Kanischka box, which in turn was found in the Kanischka stupa near Peshawar . According to the old reading, he is called the builder of the stupa . The name Agisala was believed to be the Kharoshthiform of the Greek name Agesilaos. A later cleaning and the associated new examination of the reliquary showed, however, that the inscription probably did not contain the name of the architect (navakarmika), but the name of the refectory of the monastery (agnisala). This thesis did not go unchallenged and there is still the possibility that it could be the name of an architect.
