Agnano (Naples)

The Agnano is a volcanic crater in the Phlegraean Fields near Naples in Italy. It has been known for its hot springs since ancient times and is now located in a nature reserve . The crater was once filled with water, but the Agnano Lake ( Lago di Agnano ) was drained 1870th Among other things, the famous dog grotto is located here . Part of the Astroni (nature reserve) is the Agnano area.

The place was included in the famous city atlas Civitates orbis terrarum (Cities of the World) by Braun and Hogenberg .

The poet Johann Gottfried Seume (1763-1810) climbed on his walk to Syracuse in 1802 over the Agnano to the monastery Eremo di S. Salvatore dei Camaldoli .

A splendid copperplate engraving Vue du Lac d'Agnano et des étuves de San Germano près des Naples (c. 1782) can be found in Saint Non's famous Voyage pittoresque ou Description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile .
