Agostino Magliani (* 1824 in Laurino in the province of Salerno , Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , today Italy , † 1891 in Rome , Kingdom of Italy ) was an Italian Minister of Finance.

Life

Magliani studied in Naples and lived there until 1860. In 1848 he came out with a book Storia della filosofia del diritto . In Florence he was one of the founders of the Adamo Smith Society , which aimed to combat all forms of socialism. In 1874 he published La questione monetaria .

In his career he had already risen to the post of Section President of the Chamber of Accounts when Agostino Depretis entrusted him with the finance portfolio (December 26, 1877 to March 23, 1878) in his second ministry. After the fall of Benedetto Cairolis he was again Minister of Finance (December 25, 1878 to July 15, 1879) and for the third time he took over the management of finances on November 26, 1879. He also retained his post in the newly formed Depretis cabinet of April 4, 1887, before finally resigning it in December 1888. The most important thing that happened in the financial field under the government of the Link (sliberal) en bears his name, e.g. B. the abolition of the hated grinding tax, the abolition of the compulsory rate, the reduction of the salt price, the increase of the import duties on less necessary articles. He has been accused of being too indulgent towards individual colleagues supported by Depretis, of always submitting to the Prime Minister and of often concealing the financial situation; only the continued confidence of the money market in him, or the unprecedented rise in the Italian pension, which he was thinking of converting, made him overcome the accusations in parliament.

Magliani also read on the state budget at the University of Rome and was a member of the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy.
