Agriotes sputator is a beetle from the family of beetles (Elateridae).

features

The medium-brown slender beetles reach a length of 6–9 mm. The neck plate sides of the beetle as in all species of the genus Agriotes drawn laterally downward. In contrast to Agriotes lineatus, the sides of the pronotum are approximately parallel and narrow at the front less than in Agriotes obscurus .

distribution

Agriotes sputator is found in the western Palearctic , where the species is widespread. Their distribution area extends to Central Asia. The beetle species was introduced into North America (first recorded in 1939 in New Brunswick) and occurs mainly in the Atlantic provinces of Canada. Typical habitats for the beetles are pastures, grasslands and agricultural areas, in particular grain fields.

Way of life

The beetles are active in spring from late March to June. The development of the larvae is temperature and moisture dependent and takes 2 to 4 years. Pupation usually takes place in midsummer and lasts 2-3 weeks. The larvae of Agriotes sputator develop in the soil. They feed on seedlings and on the roots of various grains, especially wheat, but also on vegetables, potatoes, conifers and other plants. The larvae cause severe crop damage when they occur in bulk and are therefore considered pests .
