The Elaterinae are the largest subfamily of the click beetles (Elateridae). It comprises around 3500 species in 200 genera and is distributed worldwide. According to Kundrata & Bocak (2011), the subfamily also includes the two tribe Cebrionini and Aplastini, which were previously considered together as the subfamily Cebrioninae.
features
In many, but not all species, the adults have a more spherical and more downward-sloping head than the species of the similar Denticollinae .
The larvae never have an indentation on the ninth tergum , which can be rounded, conical, tapering or concave. It has one or more teeth on top.
Taxonomy and systematics
The subfamily includes the following tribes :
- Adrastini Candèze, 1873
- Agriotini Champion, 1894
- Ampedini Gistel, 1856
- Aplastini Stibick, 1979
- Cebrionini Latreille, 1802
- Dicrepidiini Candèze, 1859
- Elaterini Leach, 1815
- Megapenthini Guryeva, 1973
- Melanotini Candèze, 1859
- Odontonychini Girard, 1972
- Physorhinini Candèze, 1859
- Pomachiliini Candèze, 1859
Casari (2008) examined 31 genera of the Dicrepidiini tribe and suspects that the group is in a sister relationship to the Physorhinini tribe and that the Chilean genus Ovipalpus should be spun off and placed in the Denticollinae subfamily .
