The blood-red click beetle ( Ampedus sanguineus ) is a species of the click beetle family .

description

The blood-red click beetle is 12 to 17.5 millimeters long. The head and thorax are black, while the elytra are bright red. The body is elongated and narrow. The top is covered with fine hairs. On the wing covers one can clearly see a number of longitudinal rows of dots, there are also dots on the thorax. The antennae are of medium length and clearly sawn.

Occurrence

The animals colonize parts of Europe and Asia and are found mainly in hilly or mountainous areas, less often in the plains. They inhabit forests, meadows and bushy terrain. In Central Europe they occur almost everywhere and are considered common.

Way of life

The beetles fly from March to June. The beetles are mainly observed on conifers, especially on pine , but also on beech and oak.

behavior

In case of danger they pretend to be dead. Like all click beetles, the blood-red click beetle also has a small hook-shaped outgrowth and a small hollow on the underside of the thorax. When the beetle falls on its back, it pushes the hook into the hollow and so shoots into the air. He then lands on his stomach again. The larvae, known as wireworms , hatch in August and live in old wood (especially oak and beech, but also in coniferous wood ). They are long and narrow and have thick body skin. They pupate after a few years. The finished beetle hatches from the pupa.

nutrition

The diurnal beetles feed purely on plants, preferably on umbellate flowers . You can often see the beetles sitting on them. The larvae initially feed on sludge , later they switch their diet to insect larvae and pupae . They mainly eat longhorn beetle larvae.
