location

The mosque is located on Christo Smirnensky Street in the center of Kyustendil. Next to the mosque, the remains of a Roman thermal baths were uncovered. In the immediate vicinity is the Tschifte Banja , an Ottoman hammam that was built by Sulejman Pasha in 1489 .

Building history

Ahmed Bey Mosque

The mosque was built in the middle of the 15th century. The inscription above the entrance points to the years 1734/35. Another two inscriptions on the northeast facade name the years 1575 and 1577. However, it is assumed that these dates stand for later renovations. It is also believed that the mosque was built on the remains of the medieval church Sweta Nedelja .

Today the mosque consists of a central building with a dome . A portico (colonnade) with a sloping roof was built on the front facade , which is spanned by three smaller domes. The facades were decorated with pointed arches over the windows. The walls of the mosque were made of small blocks with mortar and covered with bricks. The material for the construction comes from earlier eras. For example, when the mosque was built, decorative elements typical of the architecture of the Tarnowo school , the Second Bulgarian Empire, were reused. The minaret was preserved until 1904, but was badly damaged after an earthquake and later removed.

In 1968 the mosque was declared a national monument of historical value.
