Ahmet Ümit

Ahmet Ümit (* 1960 in Gaziantep ) is a Turkish writer. He published several detective novels, three of which were translated into German, as well as poems, numerous short stories and a fairy tale. He also wrote essays about u. a. Franz Kafka , Fjodor M. Dostojewski , Patricia Highsmith and Edgar Allan Poe .

Life

At the age of 14, Ümit began to get involved in politics. He was a member of the Turkish Communist Party until he was 29 years old . He studied from 1985 to 1986, illegal under the Turkish laws at the time, at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow . During the military dictatorship (1980-1990) he took part in underground operations and in 1989 had to go into hiding. He remained true to his leftist convictions, but also recognized the authoritarian traits of the Communist Party. He withdrew from politics and concentrated on his literary work.

He wrote his first short story in 1983 after completing a degree in administrative sciences in Istanbul . He is one of the pioneers of the crime novel with literary standards in Turkey. His books reach high editions in his home country and some have also been made into films. He also writes scripts for TV crime series.
