Aho Shemunkasho

Aho Shemunkasho (* 1969 in Beth Debe ) is a Syrian Orthodox theologian .

Life

He passed the Abitur at the Marienschule der Ursulinen in Bielefeld in 1990. Studying theology at the Paderborn Theological Faculty with a degree in theology in 1995 was followed by a master's and doctoral degree in Syrology with Sebastian P. Brock at Oxford University ( MSt 1996; DPhil 2000).

He was a research assistant at the Chair for Old Testament (1992) and in the General Student Committee (1992–1995) at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn. He was a member of the Graduate Student Committee at the Oriental Institute at the University of Oxford from 1998 to 1999. He coordinated Syrian Orthodox religious instruction in North Rhine-Westphalia (2000–2006). As a research assistant , he carried out research on the Polyglot Study Text of the Book Ben Sira project at the University of Salzburg (2002–2005). From 2006 to 2010 he taught as a university assistant in the Department of Biblical Studies and Church History in Salzburg , where he was assistant professor from 2010 to 2014 . Since 2014 he has been teaching as a professor for the history and theology of Syriac Christianity, and from the 2015/2016 winter semester he will also be offering the new university course Master of Arts in Syriac Theology .

He was supported by scholarships from the Pro Oriente Foundation (Vienna), DAAD (Bonn), Dolabani Funding (Oxford). His work focuses on oriental patristics, hagiographies, spirituality, liturgy and ecumenism. He is a member: International Society for the Study of Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature (Salzburg), Pro Oriente Forum Syriacum (Vienna), Working Committee of Pro Oriente Salzburg, Fundatio Nisibinensis (Heidelberg), Center for Research into the Christian East - ZECO (Salzburg).
