Ai Ōtsuka ( Japanese 大 塚 愛 ; born September 9, 1982 ) is a Japanese singer-songwriter from the city of Osaka . She was best known for her 2003 hit Sakuranbo , which was in the Japanese charts for 96 weeks .

Life

Ōtsuka Ai is under contract with the Japanese music label avex trax , which also produces other high-class artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki , BoA , Namie Amuro and Every Little Thing .

Her first single from 2003, Momo no Hanabira , was not very successful: It only reached number 24 in the Oricon Singles Top 100, but stayed in the charts for 21 weeks. Her next single Sakuranbo , released in December 2003, already reached twelfth place among the hundred best-selling singles in 2004. It gradually climbed to number five on the single charts and stayed there for 96 weeks. It then came back on the market in an "encore press" version, which reached number four in the charts. In March 2004 Ōtsuka Ai released her first album Love Punch , which entered the Oricon charts at number three and sold over 320,000 copies within the first week. In November 2004, its successor Love Jam was presented, with even greater commercial success. Their third album, Love Cook , was released on December 14, 2005 and placed at number one on the Oricon charts. In the first week after the start of sales alone, over 335,000 records were sold.

Ōtsuka Ai's single Yumekui was released on August 2, 2006. The piece is sung by the group "Sabakan" in the film Tokyo Friends , in which Otsuka Ai plays the leading role. On March 28, 2007, their first best-of album, Ai am BEST , was released, which reached number one in the charts in the first week alone, with over 350,000 records sold. In 2007 her first two singles were released under the stage name LOVE. The name comes from the rabbit 'Love' designed by Ai. However, none of the singles reached the top 20 of the charts. Her 4th studio album Love Piece was released in September 2007 and also reached number 1 on the charts. In December 2008 her 5th studio album LOVE LETTER was released . Since it only sold 175,889 times, it is their worst-selling album to date.

In the fall of 2010, she announced that she was pregnant. The child's father is her husband SU from the hip-hop group Rip Slyme, with whom she previously worked together for the re-recording of a song on their 2nd best-of album. The marriage of the two took place in June. On March 24, 2011, she also announced that she had had a daughter.

After a lengthy hiatus while Ōtsuka Ai focused on her new family life, in 2013 she announced through her official website that she was working on a new musical project, which later turned out to be a new band called Rabbit. Their first studio album Rabito appeared in the same year, but could not prove to be a commercial success.
