The Aichi goals ( Aichi Biodiversity Targets ) for worldwide species protection were formulated in 2010 in Nagoya , Aichi Prefecture, when the Nagoya Protocol was adopted to implement the goals of the 1993 UN Convention on Biodiversity .

aims

The Aichi goals are divided into five areas, the so-called strategic goals:

  • Addressing the causes of biodiversity loss
  • Reduction of the impact on biodiversity and promotion of sustainable forms of use
  • Improving biodiversity by protecting ecosystems and genetic diversity
  • Better implementation of species protection through planning, knowledge management and capacity building

The following 20 goals are to be achieved by 2020:

  • Core objective 1: By 2020 at the latest, people will be aware of the value of biological diversity and the steps they can take to conserve and use it sustainably.
  • Core objective 2: By 2020 at the latest, the value of biological diversity has been taken into account in national and local development and poverty reduction strategies and planning processes, and will be included in the national accounts and reporting systems as appropriate.
  • Core objective 3: By 2020 at the latest, incentives that are detrimental to biodiversity, including subsidies, will be eliminated, phased out or redesigned in order to minimize or avoid the negative impacts, and positive incentives to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are consistent and created and implemented in accordance with the Convention and other relevant international obligations and taking into account national socio-economic conditions.
  • Core objective 4: By 2020 at the latest, governments, companies and interest groups at all levels have taken steps or implemented plans to ensure sustainable production and consumption and have limited the effects of the use of natural resources to an ecologically acceptable level.
  • Core objective 5: By 2020, the rate of loss of all natural habitats, including forests, will be reduced by at least half and, where possible, to close to zero, and deterioration and fragmentation will be significantly reduced.
  • Target 6: By 2020, all fish, invertebrate and aquatic plants are managed and used sustainably, properly and on the basis of ecosystem approaches so that overfishing is avoided, and recovery plans and measures are in place for all decimated species, with no significant adverse effects on threatened ones Species and sensitive ecosystems given by fishing and the effects of fishing on stocks, species and ecosystems limited to an ecologically acceptable level.
  • Core objective 7: By 2020, all areas used for agriculture, aquaculture and forestry will be managed sustainably while ensuring the protection of biological diversity.
  • Core objective 8: By 2020, the pollution of the environment, including from excess nutrients, has been brought back to a level that is harmless to ecosystem function and biological diversity.
  • Core objective 9: By 2020, the invasive alien species and their routes of introduction will have been identified and prioritized, priority species will be controlled or eliminated, and measures taken to monitor the routes of incidence in order to prevent them from being introduced and settled.
  • Core objective 10: By 2015, the diverse anthropogenic pressures on coral reefs and the other sensitive ecosystems affected by climate change or ocean acidification will be reduced to a minimum, so that their integrity and functionality are preserved.
  • Core objective 11: By 2020, at least 17 percent of land and inland water areas and 10 percent of coastal and marine areas, in particular areas of particular importance for biological diversity and ecosystem services, are through effectively and fairly managed, ecologically representative and well-networked protected area systems and other effective area-related conservation measures are protected and integrated into the surrounding (terrestrial / marine) landscape.
  • Core objective 12: By 2020, the extinction of known threatened species has been prevented and their conservation situation, especially that of the most declining species, has been improved and stabilized.
  • Core objective 13: By 2020, the genetic diversity of crops and farm animals and their wild relatives, including other socio-economic and culturally valuable species, has been secured and strategies have been developed and implemented to limit genetic impoverishment as much as possible and to preserve genetic diversity.
  • Core target 14: By 2020, the ecosystems that provide essential services, including water-related services and contribute to health, livelihoods and well-being, will be restored and secured, taking into account the needs of women, indigenous and local communities as well as the poorer and more vulnerable population groups.
  • Core objective 15: By 2020, the resilience of ecosystems and the contribution of biological diversity to carbon stocks will be increased through conservation and restoration measures, including the restoration of at least 15 percent of the damaged ecosystems, and thus a contribution to mitigating and adapting to climate change as well to combat desertification.
  • Target 16: By 2015, the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Their Use in accordance with national law will be in force and effective.
  • Core objective 17: By 2015, all contracting parties have elaborated effective, participatory and updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans, adopted them as a policy instrument and started their implementation.
  • Target 18: By 2020, the traditional knowledge, innovations and customs of indigenous and local communities, which are important for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, and their traditional uses of biological resources will be respected, subject to national legislation and relevant international obligations, and in the implementation of the Convention full and effective participation of indigenous and local communities at all relevant levels.
  • Target 19: By 2020, knowledge, science base and technologies related to biodiversity, its values and functions, its status and trends and the consequences of its loss will be improved, widely disseminated, shared and applied.
  • Headline Goal 20: By 2020 at the latest, the mobilization of financial resources for the effective implementation of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 from all sources and in accordance with the process summarized and agreed in the Financial Mobilization Strategy is to increase significantly from the current state. This objective may change in accordance with the budgetary requirement estimates to be drawn up and transmitted by the contracting parties. A reference to Article 16 of the Convention is added to the technical justification.
