The Aichi D1A ( Japanese 九四 式 艦上 爆 撃 機 , kyūyon-shiki kanjō bakugekiki , German about: "Type 94 carrier-supported bomber" allied code name Susie ) was a carrier-supported Japanese dive bomber in World War II .

development

The D1A was developed as part of the German-Japanese cooperation with Heinkel on the basis of the Heinkel He 50 or its export version He 66 . The D1A was a double-decker with a rigid landing gear.

Two variants were built: the D1A1 with 162 and the D1A2 with 428 units. The first flight took place in 1934 (according to the Japanese calendar at that time: Kōki 2594, hence the Japanese type designation). Production stopped in 1940. The last machine went out of service in 1942.

The machines were stationed on the carriers Akagi , Kaga and Ryūjō .
