The Ailao Mountains ( Chinese 哀牢山 , Pinyin Āiláo Shān ; Hani : Hhaqlol haolgaoq ) are located in the central southern region of the southwest Chinese province of Yunnan .
It forms the watershed between the Yuan Jiang元 江 (the Red River ) and Amo Jiang阿 墨 江rivers . It forms the borderline between the Yunnan Highlands and the Hengduan Mountains .
The Ailaoshan Nature Reserve (Chinese Ailao Shan ziran baohuqu 哀牢山 自然保护区; English Ailao Mountain Nature Reserve ) was established in the mountains in 1986 .
