On March 6, 2003, a Boeing 737-200 crashed on Air Algérie flight 6289 immediately after take-off from Aguenar airport in Tamanrasset . Of the 103 occupants, only one passenger survived the accident.
the accident
The Air Algérie Boeing 737 was on a national scheduled flight from Tamanrasset via Ghardaia to Algiers . The aircraft took off from runway 02 in Tamanrasset at around 3:15 p.m. local time with almost maximum take-off weight . The start was carried out by the co-pilot. When the Boeing reached a height of approximately 25 meters (78 feet), the co-pilot ordered the landing gear to be retracted. At the same moment the left engine failed due to a turbine failure. The flight captain immediately took control of the aircraft and continued climbing. Three seconds later the co-pilot asked if he should retract the landing gear, but received no answer. Meanwhile the speed decreased steadily. At a height of about 130 meters (398 feet), the speed dropped to about 248 km / h (134 knots), whereupon the flow broke off the wings and the machine crashed. The Boeing 737 hit rocky terrain 1,645 meters beyond the end of the runway.
Cause of accident
The master continued the climb after the engine failed without reducing the climb angle accordingly. In addition, the crew failed to retract the landing gear. This increased the aircraft's drag and contributed to the further decrease in speed.
