Air Austria was an Austrian airline . It was founded on January 9, 1956 in Austria after regaining air sovereignty through the State Treaty of 1955 and was supposed to start regular services from Vienna to Moscow , Düsseldorf , Amsterdam and Cairo . However, the private airline, close to the ÖVP and cooperating with KLM , never started flight operations.
In the run-up to the foundation, there were violent internal political disputes. The then incumbent Austrian Chancellor Julius Raab refused a state participation in Air Austria, as demanded by the opposition parties, because another state-owned company in Austria was not desirable.
On April 4, 1957, after long negotiations between the governing parties ÖVP and SPÖ, Air Austria merged with the state-owned Austrian Airways to form today's Austrian Airlines .
