The Air Equator was an airline based in Hithadhoo on the southernmost atoll of the Maldives . It operated connections between Gan International Airport and the other main islands of the archipelago . The airline ceased operations in August 2005.

history

The airline was founded in 2003 and received the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Maldives Civil Aviation Office on October 10, 2004 . Operations began on October 15, 2004 with flights from Gan to the capital, Malé .

The airline was owned by A. Faiz and Anup Murthy (60%) and Ziaf Enterprises Maldives (40%). Subsequently, the majority shares of SPA Aviation from Sri Lanka were acquired. From the beginning, Anup Murthy was the GM / CEO of the company and the executive director of the company approved by the Maldivian Civil Aviation Office. He was also responsible for procuring the company's only aircraft.

Flight operations of the company was the tsunami of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 impaired. Aid supplies had to be flown to the affected islands. The company's only plane was chartered by the media and press accompanying the visit of then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2005 . He visited the islands to examine the damage caused by the tsunami.

The airline stopped all flights in May 2005. Operations ceased in August 2005 after SPA Aviation and A. Faiz agreed on financial and administrative control. SPA Aviation had plans to revive the airline but could not do so.

Air Equator served the destinations Hanimaadhoo , Kaadedhdhoo and Malé from its home airport Gan . All destinations were within the Maldives. No international flights were offered.

The Air Equator's fleet in January 2005 consisted of a single Fairchild F-27F . The aircraft is still in the colors of the Air Equator in a meadow near Gan International Airport.
