Air Policing Island

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Air Policing Iceland (English Icelandic Air Policing ) was the original name of a NATO mission to monitor and protect the airspace of Iceland . Since 2013, practice flights have generally been the primary goal of the relocations instead of air policing. The current name of the mission is Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities as a contribution to Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness Needs (ASIC IPPN).

Iceland does have a Control and Reporting Center (CRC) and constantly creates an air situation report for the country; however, other NATO members are responsible for monitoring and securing the air space, as Iceland is not in a position to carry out aerial visual identification or to enforce air sovereignty itself (e.g. by intercepting or pushing away).

Until September 2006, the United States Air Force performed the air policing function. After their withdrawal, there were repeated penetrations by Russian military aircraft. As a result, the Icelandic government demanded support from NATO partners in the form of regular dispatches of fighter planes to Iceland. The first deployment took place in May 2008, and fighters are then stationed at Keflavík Air Base in southwest Iceland .

In contrast to Air Policing Baltic States , which is based on a permanent presence of NATO fighters in Šiauliai (Lithuania), the Icelandic government did not demand a permanent NATO presence in Keflavík. Instead, there were initially an average of three postings per year, each lasting around two to three weeks. The first deployment of NATO fighters began on May 5, 2008, when four French Mirage 2000 patrols over Iceland. The jet fighters returned to France on June 30th. A planned deployment of four British Typhoon F2 Eurofighters failed in December 2008 due to a political conflict between Iceland and Great Britain. Poland also canceled a planned contribution with its F-16s to the alarm riot in 2010 due to the consequences of the financial crisis . Fighter jets stationed in Iceland are supported by NATO Boeing E-3 Entry AWACS aircraft, which complement the Icelandic air traffic control agency .
