The Air Tractor AT-802 is a single-engine agricultural and fire-fighting aircraft from the US manufacturer Air Tractor . Armed variants are used to counter insurgency in various conflicts.

history

The development of the Air Tractor AT-802 began in July 1989. The first flight of the first prototype (N802LS) took place on October 30, 1990. The first AT-802A had its first flight on July 6, 1992. The AT-802A was approved by the FAA in March; the AT-802 was approved in April 1993 and the AT-802F on December 17, 1992. The first production aircraft were delivered in the second half of 1993 and had even weaker Pratt & Whitney - PT6A-45R -Triebwerke. It is built as a two-seat AT-802 and a single-seat AT-802A for agricultural use, as well as an AT-802F or AT-802AF Fire Boss as a fire-fighting aircraft with a water capacity of 3000 liters and floats . In total, more than 200 AT-802s had been built up to 2005 and delivered to the USA, Australia , Canada and various European countries.

The military version Air Tractor AT-802U for COIN missions ( fight against partisans, gangs and terrorists) was built in 2007 and first presented in 2009 at the Paris Le Bourget 2009 air show . It is armored, has an imaging reconnaissance and targeting system with the possibility of data transmission and can be equipped with bombs, 12.7 mm machine guns, missile containers and guided weapons. With additional tanks, it can fly for up to ten hours.

The Air Tractor AT-802 is a very large for this purpose low-wing aircraft provided by turboprop a five-blade propeller Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A and Hartzell HC-B5MP is driven. The three-wheeled landing gear is not retractable.

use

After the big fires in December 2010 with 41 dead in the Carmel Mountains , the Israeli government temporarily put seven planes from Spain into service as fire-fighting planes.

An early armed version of the Air Tractor AT-802 Archangel was used in the civil war in Libya and Yemen by the armed forces of the United Arab Emirates , which it had procured for border patrols. UAE planes also reached Jordan.
