The Hartzell Propeller Inc. is an American manufacturer of aircraft propellers .

history

John T. Hartzell founded the Hartzell Hardwoods as a sawmill in Greenville in 1875 . In 1900 his son, George W. Hartzell, took over the company and relocated the factory to Piqua, Ohio. From here, Hartzell exported wood to Europe. Because of the export embargo at the outbreak of the First World War , Hartzell switched to arms production. The grandson of the company founder, Robert N. Hartzell, was enthusiastic about the flights of the Wright brothers , whose aircraft factory was in the immediate vicinity of Hartzell. Robert left the university and built up a department for aircraft propellers at Hartzell.

The foundation of Hartzell Propeller Inc. took place in 1917 and Hartzell Propeller built the first for Glenn Curtiss Company. Propeller production for Dayton-Wright Aircraft began in 1918 . In the following years Hartzell equipped more and more American aircraft with wooden propellers. The up to 5.5 meter tall propellers of the airships USS Akron and USS Macon also came from Hartzell.

In 1942 Hartzell began producing aluminum propellers for the American Air Force. After the war, Hartzell built the world's first composite propeller. In 1952 Hartzell designed the first fully adjustable propeller and was thus instrumental in the rise of the Beech , Cessna and Piper companies , which equipped their single-engine aircraft with them. In 1975 a Short 330 flew for the first time with a five-blade Hartzell propeller, followed in 1987 by a Short 360 with the first six-blade propeller. In 1986 the Voyager experimental aircraft with Hartzell propellers circled the world and set several world records that are still unbeaten today. In 1989, a Boeing drone powered by Hartzell flew up to an altitude of 66,980  feet (20,430 meters), which set the record for a propeller-driven aircraft. Today Hartzell is a well-known supplier and outfitter for aircraft manufacturers worldwide.

Products

The product range includes aluminum propellers with two to five blades and composite propellers for use in turboprops with three to six blades. An estimated 250,000 Hartzell propellers are in use worldwide. The Hartzell Propeller Factory Service Center is located at the local airfield north of Piqua at Piqua Airport (Hartzell Field).
