EU ban on disposable plastic products

In October 2018, the European Parliament voted for a ban on the sale of single-use plastic particles until 2021. According to this, single-use plastic products such as plates , cutlery and straws are to be banned until 2021. Airlines and catering services use single-use plastic products on board of passenger aircraft because of their low cost, light weight and ease of use.

According to the currently applicable European regulations for international kitchen waste (ICW), airlines must burn all kitchen waste that comes outside the EU borders or dispose of it in a deep landfill to prevent disease. In addition, many supervisory authorities apply the precautionary principle and require that all kitchen waste is incinerated regardless of its origin, this also applies to flights within the EU. While the ACA is not against the new EU rules, it believes the rules will have little environmental benefit. The association also assumes that airlines would pass on the costs of replacing single-use plastics with sustainable or biodegradable materials to their passengers. The ACA is therefore planning to create a list of alternative materials to plastic that are suitable for use on board in terms of hygiene, high temperature resistance and storage on long-haul flights.

Members

The ACA consists of a total of five members, these are as follows:
