Airman is a rank ( OR-2 ) of the US Air Force and a usage name of the US Navy . In the Royal Air Force , the teams are mostly referred to as Airman . In addition, the term can refer to any soldier in the air force of a country, as well as pilots, regardless of whether they are military or civil. If the whole word is capitalized, it can mean any soldier in the US Air Force, regardless of whether it is an officer or non-commissioned officer . In the parlance of the Federal Aviation Administration , an airman can mean someone who controls an aircraft.

In the US Air Force, the Airman ( Amn ) is the second lowest rank. From the lowest rank Airman Basic , a soldier is usually promoted after six months of service. Airman First Class follows the rank .

In the US Navy, the Airman is a usage name for crews who are deployed to maintain naval aircraft.
