The airport center in Himmelreich , municipality of Wals-Siezenheim near Salzburg , covers an area of 200,000 m² and is the largest commercial cluster in western Austria . It comprises a shopping center with an area of 44,000 m² and a large number of non-shopping centers, but connected business premises with their own management, as well as one of Salzburg's two urban entertainment centers .

The actual airport center no longer exists in its original form as a connected shopping center. It comprised a hotel, the head office of the drugstore chain dm (built as the Schwaighofer furniture store) and a shopping center, which is now the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Salzburg.

The airport center is owned by an insurance consortium and was previously managed by Stiller-Hohla Immobilientreuhand .

history

In 1993 the shopping mall and the Austria Trend Hotels Salzburg-West were opened. When it opened in 1993, the Airport Center was the only large shopping center in this area of the city. Subsequently, a retail park with a multiplex cinema ( Cineplexx , Nachtschicht and Baumax ), a McDonald's restaurant and various smaller shops was built on the surrounding area . With the opening of the Europark in 1997, a competitor emerged only 3 kilometers or one motorway exit away, which was able to score with a similar branch mix and clearer architecture.

In 2000, another part of the building with 10,000 m² of retail space was built, which the Schwaighofer furniture store moved into. This company was the largest tenant in the airport center, but the branch was closed in 2002 due to the liquidation of the company. Only in 2006 was it possible to find a new tenant for this part of the building with the drugstore chain dm, which set up its company headquarters here. According to the operator's wishes, this component should be included in the factory outlet center, which was already planned at the time, but use as office space was politically enforced.

In the period from 2000 to the end of 2005 there was an intensive political discussion about the future of the Airport Center, as it was not successful, partly because of the overwhelming competition Europark.

After the last tenants of the old shopping center moved out in 2006, it was demolished and the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Salzburg built in its place. Of the Airport Center, which opened in 1994, only the Austria Trend Hotel Salzburg-West and the part of the building erected in 2000 that houses the corporate headquarters of dm remain. The factory outlet center opened on September 10, 2009. The main financier for the renovation was Wiener Städtische insurance , which invested around 135 million euros. Up to 1000 new jobs were created in the new factory outlet center. There are 140 branded goods shops on around 26,000 m².

location

The Designer Outlet Salzburg is located on the western outskirts of Salzburg, next to its namesake, Salzburg Airport . It can be reached publicly with the city bus lines 2 and 10 from the center as well as with various regional bus lines, and by car via the Westautobahn exit Salzburg Airport .
