Aivar Sõerd
Aivar Sõerd (born November 22, 1964 in Haapsalu ) is an Estonian politician and financial expert.
Life and politics
Aivar Sõerd graduated from school in Võru in southern Estonia in 1983 . 1990 graduated from Tartu University Faculty of Economics . Further studies took him from 1994 to 1996 at the University of Oulu in Finland .
From 1990 to 1993 Sõerd initially worked for an Estonian insurance company. He then moved to the Estonian Ministry of Finance from 1993 to 1996.
From 1996 to 1999, Aivar Sõerd was Deputy Director of the Estonian Tax Office (Eesti Maksuamet ). From 1999 to 2003 he headed the agency. In 2003 Sõerd had to give up his post in a dispute with the then Finance Minister Tõnis Palts . In 2004/2005 Sõerd was the managing director of the Estonian publishing house Vaba Maa before he became involved in active politics.
From April 2005 to April 2007 Sõerd was Minister of Finance of the Republic of Estonia in the coalition government of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip . He belonged to the cabinet at that time as a member of the rural Estonian People's Union (Rahvaliit) .
After leaving the government, he returned to the private sector for an Estonian tourism company.
In 2010 Sõerd resigned from the dissolving Estonian People's Union and joined the liberal Estonian Reform Party (Eesti Reformierakond) . In the 2011 general election he was first in the Riigikogu voted. In the parliamentary elections in 2015 and 2019 , the financial expert was able to successfully defend his mandate.
