The German Academy for Children's and Youth Literature eV , based in Volkach , was founded in 1976.

tasks

The academy's task is the non-profit promotion of children's and young people's literature. In addition, it annually awards the Grand Prize of the German Academy for Children's and Youth Literature. V. Volkach for a publication (novel or picture book) or for “outstanding scientific, journalistic or literary educational work in the field of children's and youth literature”. In addition, since 2009 a prize for young talents worth 2500 euros (as of 2019) has been awarded for German-language children's and youth literature , which was renamed the Korbinian Paul Maar Prize on the occasion of Paul Maar's eightieth birthday in 2017 . The Volkacher Taler is also awarded annually to people who have made a special contribution to promoting children's and young people's literature.

Since its inception, the academy has also awarded current books from the categories of young people's books, children's books and picture books the title Book of the Month every month . The books honored in this way are allowed to carry a seal of approval from the Academy and are announced in monthly press releases and in recommendation lists. The academy sees this award as a continuous contribution to youth book work and reading promotion.

The German Academy for Children's and Young People's Literature also publishes its free magazine Volkacher Bote three times a year , which reports on academy affairs and current topics. In addition, catalogs of recommendations for children's and youth literature are periodically published in cooperation with the working group of youth book publishers. The academy also holds seminars on the subject.

The academy is supported by the city of Volkach, the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, the Bavarian Savings Bank Foundation and the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth.

It consists of ordinary (maximum 40), supporting and corresponding members as well as honorary members. The current president is the literary scholar Claudia Maria Pecher , her predecessor Kurt Franz is honorary president.
