life and work

Akamatsu Rinsaku was born in Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture. From 1896 he studied painting at the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō (東京 美術 学校), the forerunner of today's Geidai under Yamanouchi Gusen (山 内 愚 僊; 1866-1927). From 1900 he worked as a teacher. In 1902 he exhibited the painting “Night Train” (夜 汽車; Yakisha) at the Hakubakai (白馬 会) artists' association, for which he was awarded a prize by the association. In 1904 he began working for the Asahi newspaper in Osaka, for which he did illustrations . He got to know artists who were involved in the "Hanshin Meisho Zue" (阪神 名 所 図 絵), a collection of pictures from the Hanshin area. This led to close contact with the publisher Kanao Tanejirō (金 尾 種 次郎; 1879-1947), who ran his publishing house "Kanao Bunendō" (金 尾 文淵 堂). Akamatsu's draft covers for volumes 1, 2 and 6 are in the British Museum .

In 1915 Akamatsu left the paper and went back to teaching. In 1918 he joined the artist community "Kōfukai" (光 風 会). In 1936 he created the mural "Visit of Emperor Meiji of Tsumura-Betsuin" for the Meiji Memorial Gallery (明治天皇 津 村 別 院 行 幸 図, Meiji Tennō Tsumura-Betsuin Gyōkō).

Akamatsu taught at various institutions in Osaka and became an influential figure in the artistic community. He took over the office of secretary of the Osaka Art Association. Above all he was known for his loosely colored drawings and as a painter of everyday life. Saeki Yūzō was one of his students .
