Scene from 2013

history

The cordless screwdriver race was invented by Andreas Schulz , professor of product design at the Faculty of Design at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen . The first race - exclusively among HAWK students - took place on June 4, 2003 and has been annually since then. In 2006, Barbara Kotte , also a professor at the HAWK Faculty of Design, took part in organizing the event for the first time. The race was also opened to students from other universities and made known to a wider public. Bosch Power Tools has been the main sponsor of the race since 2009 . The cordless screwdriver race is now being imitated outside the HAWK.

role models

The model for the creative competition was the Rubber Cup, organized by Richard Sapper , former professor of product design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , an annual competition in Stuttgart in which rubber-powered vehicles compete against each other to cover the greatest possible distance.

Regulations

The cordless screwdriver race is about vehicles that are powered by a standard, commercially available cordless screwdriver and that one person can drive against each other. The drive of the cordless drill with 18 volts and around 41 amps develops an output of around 740 watts or one horsepower (PS). The capacity of the battery is 1.5 Ah . All students from design schools can take part. A team should consist of up to five students, no more than two teams per university may participate. The vehicle must not be a single-track vehicle. The cordless screwdriver must not be modified.

The race is not just about speed, other criteria are also evaluated.

Often it was specified to show an unusual solution in lightweight construction. Each vehicle is weighed before the race. The recommended weight for the driver is 70 kg. If a driver weighs less, appropriate weights are attached to the driver's stomach and back to compensate. The speed is measured in the oval course, the design and technical implementation is judged by a jury of experts.

In 2018 the given motto was "Out of the Box", in which the participants had to assemble a roadworthy vehicle from a box with the dimensions 78 × 52 × 30 cm.

At the start, the vehicles can be pushed over 5 m by another team member. The cordless screwdriver must first be installed directly on the starting line. The battery may be changed once during the race. The driver must wear a helmet.
