Action against hunger is the German section of Action Contre la Faim (ACF International). The main goal is the fight against malnutrition and hunger. The international programs aim to save malnourished children from starvation, provide access to safe drinking water and create sustainable solutions to hunger. According to the international annual report, the organization was active in 46 countries in 2017 and reached more than 20 million people. Donations and donations from institutional donors amounted to more than 412 million euros in the same year. The organization has main offices in France, Spain, Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Italy and Germany and employs around 7,900 people worldwide.

history

The organization was founded in France in 1979 by French intellectuals in response to the war in Afghanistan. The founders included Jacques Attali , Françoise Giroud , Marek Halter , Bernard-Henri Lévy , Guy Sorman, Jean-Christophe Victor and other writers, journalists and doctors.

Task areas of the organization

The organization is dedicated to the following fields of activity:

nutrition

The organization's international programs aim to combat malnutrition and malnutrition. In acute crises, Aktion gegen die Hunger supports those affected with food aid. Among other things, the organization supplies malnourished children with pastries that have been fortified with vitamins. In addition to inpatient and outpatient treatment of malnourished children, this also includes prevention programs. Affected regions and countries receive long-term support from the organization in order to sustainably secure the nutritional basis of the population at risk.

Water and hygiene

The organization runs programs to provide access to safe drinking water, including building wells and installing hand pumps. At the same time, sanitary facilities are being installed or renovated and hygiene promoted so that the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea or dysentery can be contained. For example, Action Against Hunger distributes soaps to promote hygiene.

Emergency aid

In the event of humanitarian and natural disasters, the organization sends emergency aid teams to the affected areas. The population is provided with emergency accommodation, clean water, food and hygiene products as needed. To this end, global stocks are stored at strategically important points. In areas where there is an increased risk of natural disasters, Action Against Hunger prepares the population with training for crisis situations.

Livelihoods

The organization implements food security programs to prevent future outbreaks of malnutrition and famine. When planning the programs, a. Geography, climate and political conditions are taken into account. The local communities are included in the planning.

Run against hunger

Since 2015, the "Run against Hunger" has also been held in Germany every year. This is organized in eight countries around the world. Schoolchildren run for a good cause. You look for sponsors in advance who promise a fixed amount of donation for each round run. The global income is used to support projects against Hunger. The focus is on a different country every year. Employees of the organization give lectures in schools to educate people about hunger and malnutrition. The work of the organization and the local way of life are presented using the example of the respective focus country.

Human Rights Film Festival Berlin

In September 2018 the " Human Rights Film Festival Berlin " took place for the first time in Berlin . The documentary film festival was organized by Aktion gegen die Hunger. The patron of the first edition was the artist and human rights activist Ai Weiwei . A total of 25 films were shown in 40 screenings. More than half of them were sold out. The focus was on displacement and migration. Filmmakers and representatives of other non-governmental organizations, such as B.
