The North Sea Action Conference (AKN) was a German marine protection association . It was founded in Bremen in 1985 with the aim of contributing to the development and promotion of environmentally and socially compatible structures for the North Sea ecosystem and for the rivers that flow into the North Sea. Active work was stopped by 2009 at the latest, the employee was dismissed and the association's office was closed.

history

After the alarming first North Sea report of the Council of Experts for Environmental Issues in 1980, German and international environmental organizations and scientists called for a fundamental rethinking of the protection of the seas and as an "answer to the failure of politics" in October 1984 in Bremen at an "action conference North Sea ", in which around 700 people took part, formulated the North Sea Memorandum . All participants felt obliged to follow these guidelines of an ecological and conservative North Sea policy, whereupon an association was founded in February 1985, which was entered in the register of associations at the Bremen District Court with the addition of eV . The North Sea Action Conference is recognized by the tax office as non-profit .

Active work was stopped in 2009 due to financial difficulties.

Purpose is

  • to promote awareness of environmental hazards and
  • to exert political pressure to address the causes of the threat to the North Sea.

The AKN coordinates the North Sea activities of initiatives and organizations and represents the German environmental groups in the international Federation Seas at Risk , an association of environmental organizations around the North Sea.

For school and general education were u. a. Teaching materials on chlorine chemistry and the Wadden Sea developed. The North Sea Action Conference creates reports and information sheets .

The AKN office in Bremen is a contact address for scientific and environmental questions from Germany and abroad.

Publications

Since September 1986 the magazine Waterkant - Environment + People + Work in the North Sea Region has been published as a newsletter of the AKN. The editor of the paper (and owner of the title rights) is Burkhard Ilschner. In the course of 22 years and more than 90 issues, the magazine has always been able to attract individual authors who were either already prominent or who became prominent in the following years.
