Akure Township Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Akure , Ondo State , Nigeria . It has a capacity of 10,000 spectators, is currently mainly used for football matches and is the home ground of Sunshine Stars FC

However, he has played his home games at the Gateway International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode since November 14, 2010 and beat defending champions FC Enyimba 2-1 on the second matchday at that time . The move was necessary because the Akure Township Stadium did not meet the standards of the Nigerian Premier League .

history

The Akure Township Stadium was built in 1976 under the then Governor of the Western States Christopher Oluwole Rotimi to promote sporting activities in the region. While it was used as a simple training ground in the beginning, the following governments gave it the status of a stadium. However, no major sporting events took place here either, which was due to the poor condition of the facilities.

Only the government of Olusegun Agagu planned in 2008 to establish a stadium of international stature here. Thus, an order for 3.7 billion Naira was awarded to CCC Construction Nigeria Limited. An arena with 15,000 seats, training areas, a tartan track and other facilities should be built here by April 2010 .

However, despite an advance payment of 1.8 billion naira and construction work that had already started, the new government of Olusegun Mimiko stopped the construction just 5 months later on the grounds that the future stadium would not meet international standards.
