Akutagawa Composition Prize
The Akutagawa Composition Prize ( Japanese 芥 川 作曲 賞 , Akutagawa Sakkyokushō ) is a Japanese music prize that has been awarded annually since April 1990 by the “Suntory Music Foundation” ( サ ン ト リ ー 音 楽 財 団 , ~ ongakuzaidan , since 2009 part of the “Suntory for Arts”) Music prize awarded in memory of the musician Akutagawa Yasushi , the third son of the writer Akutagawa Ryūnosuke . Pioneering works by aspiring musicians are awarded.
A peculiarity of the award is the fact that the selection process is public. The final selection always takes place at the end of August in the Suntory Hall . After the performance of the pieces of music, the three jury members will have a public debate on the award of the prize. The laureate receives a certificate and a sum of 500,000 yen. In addition, the laureate is commissioned to write a new orchestral work that will be performed in a concert under the patronage of the foundation, usually two years after the award.
