The Akyar Dam ( Turkish Akyar Barajı ) is located 10 km north-northwest of the city of Kızılcahamam , 70 km northwest of the Turkish capital Ankara in the province of the same name .
The Akyar dam was built in 1993–1999 to supply drinking water to the Ankara metropolitan area on Bulak Çayı , the left source river of the Kirmir Çayı .
The barrier structure is a gravel embankment dam with a clay core . The dam height above the valley floor is 71 m (other sources give a height of 85 m). The dam volume is 2.925 million m³. The reservoir covers an area of 1.9 km² with normal damming. The storage volume is 56 million m³.
