al-Baha ( Arabic الباحة, DMG al-Bāḥa , also al-Bahah ) is a city in western Saudi Arabia within the Hejaz region . It is the capital of the province of al-Baha and is one of the main tourist attractions in the country due to its nature and traditional architecture. It enjoys a relatively moderate climate and is surrounded by more than 40 forests, making it one of the greenest regions in the country. Al-Baha is the headquarters of the governor, local councils, and branches of government departments. The city of al-Baha receives special attention from the state and is the location of the most important educational, tourism and health institutions in the province. The city is considered the capital of the Ghamid and Zahran tribes , to which most of the residents belong.

history

In the past the area was known as the Ghamid and Zahran, which are also the names of the two major indigenous tribes. The tribes in the region date back to the famous pre-Islamic state of Saba , whose rule extended to what is now known as Syria and Lebanon . Historians assume that they founded the state of Aksum in Abyssinia .

Later the city fell under the rule of the Ottoman Empire . Since 1932 the city has belonged to today's state of Saudi Arabia.

climate

Al-Baha has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh). The climate is strongly influenced by its different geographical features. Al-Baha has a generally mild climate with temperatures between 12 and 23 degrees. Due to its location at over 2000 meters above sea level, the climate is temperate in summer and cold in winter. The area attracts visitors looking for a temperate climate and unspoiled landscapes.

Infrastructure

With the Al-Baha Domestic Airport, the city ​​has a small airport for domestic flights. The city has a university that opened in 2006 and several hospitals. In addition to modern retail stores, there is a traditional market ( suq ).

economy

The province is known for the production of honey as well as for the agricultural production of vegetables , grains , fruits and dates . The province is also known for its pomegranate industry. The province produces more than 30,000 tons. In the modern era, tourism has become important.
