Al-Jenadriyah

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

al-Jenadriyah (spelling also al-Janadriyah; Arabic مهرجان الجنادرية, DMG Mahraǧān al-Ǧanādiriyya ) is a two to three-week cultural festival and folk festival in Saudi Arabia . It has been held annually since 1985 in February / March / mid-April in the town of al-Thamama around 45 kilometers north of the capital Riyadh . It regularly attracts at least one million visitors, in 2013 it should have been 6 million.

Part of the festival organized by the National Guard include competitions in camel riding and horse racing, performances of folkloric dances, music and theater performances, a market for arts and crafts, a book fair and an exhibition of the Saudi Arabian economy. The regions of Saudi Arabia show their traditions and products on their own parcels of the extensive grounds. The government and state organizations also use the framework of the major event for their self-expression.

For several years now, a changing host country with its culture and economy has been presenting itself, in 2016 this will be Germany . This was originally supposed to be the case in 2015, but that year the festival was canceled at short notice due to the death of King Abdullah . Because of the mass executions in Saudi Arabia in early 2016 , the participation of the Federal Republic and the Foreign Minister in the festival met with criticism in Germany. The companies Volkswagen , Airbus and Herrenknecht will be exhibiting in the German pavilion . The state of Baden-Württemberg is also present there and the Goethe-Institut offers a cultural program.
