Al-Machriq

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Machriq is a scientific Catholic Arabic-language magazine published by the mostly Jesuit professors of the Université Saint-Joseph . The magazine's subtitle is Revue Catholique Orientale, Sciences, Lettres, Arts . The magazine was founded in 1898 by the Jesuit father Louis Cheikhô (1859–1927) in Beirut and in 1998 had a total of 72 volumes. The term 'al-Machriq' ( Arabic المشرق, DMG al-Mašriq , cf. Maschrek ) means in German the East or the Orient . The magazine served as the mouthpiece of the Syro-Lebanese Jesuits in Beirut. The Islamic reformer Rashid Rida polemicized against them. Habib Zayat (1871–1954) was one of their employees.

According to the Islamic scholar Raif Georges Khoury (1936–2017), this magazine "decisively promoted the modern Arab renaissance, connected East and West and emphasized the role of the Christian elite in Lebanon and the Arab world in the dialogue between denominations and cultures."
