Louis Cheikhô

Louis Cheikhô (born February 5, 1859 in Mardin , † 1927 in Beirut ; real name Rizq Allah Cheikhô لويس شيخو) was an orientalist , theologian and Jesuit .

education

Cheikhô followed his brother to the Jesuit school in Ghazîr in Lebanon in 1868. There he learned modern and old European and oriental languages . He then entered the Lons-le-Saunier Jesuit Seminary in France in 1874 . From 1878 to 1888 he taught Arabic literature at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut , while studying philosophy at the same university. He then studied theology for four years in Great Britain and for one year each in Vienna and Paris . From 1894 he taught again in Beirut.

Act

He is seen as an important scientist and pioneer who rediscovered the legacy of Christian Arab culture. He published unpublished Christian-Oriental literature in Arabic , which he collected while traveling in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Turkey . He also edited the magazine al-Machriq , which he founded in 1898.
