al-Shahrastani
Ash-Shahrastani ( Arabic الشهرستاني, DMG aš-Šahrastānī ; * 1076 in Shahrastan ; † 1153 ) was an Islamic religious historian of the Middle Ages. He comes from Schahrastan, a place in Khorasan , Iran . One of the most famous works of Shahrastani is the Kitab al-Milal wa al-Nihal .
Kitab al-Milal wa-n-Nihal
In the work Kitāb al-Milal wa-n-Nihal (Arabicكتاب الملل و النحل, 'Book of Groups and Faiths'; engl. The Book of Sects and Creeds ) is a study of the then known groups in Islam up to the beginning of the 12th century. The work also contains numerous individual biographies. It lists both Sunnis and Shiite dignitaries .
The work was completely translated from Arabic into German by Theodor Haarbrücker and provided with explanatory notes.
A French translation of this work by D. Gimaret, G. Monnot, J. Jolivet (1986) was sponsored by UNESCO and appeared in its second edition in 1993.
