Alain Mathot (born August 29, 1972 in Seraing ) is a Belgian politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS). He is a member of the federal Chamber of Deputies. He was the acting mayor of Seraing. Alain Mathot is the son of the former Minister and Mayor of Seraing, Guy Mathot (PS).

Life

Alain Mathot grew up in a family with a socialist tradition. His father, Guy Mathot, was a long-time MP, Minister and Mayor for the PS. His grandparents were also politically active on the left. At the age of 18, Alain Mathot also became a member of the PS.

Mathot first studied economics at the University of Liège (ULg), but went straight into professional life after his third year of study and worked in the real estate industry as a consultant and broker.

Mathot ran his first real political election campaign in 1999, when he ran as the third substitute candidate in the regional elections and achieved a remarkable result. The following year, Mathot was elected to the Flémalle parish council. Mathot has also been a federal member of parliament since 2003. In 2006, after he left Flémalle and returned to Seraing, his hometown, he was able to fight for mayor's office.

Within the PS, Mathot is vice-chairman of the Liege Federation of PS. There, especially since the federal elections in 2010, he was said to have had a tense relationship with Michel Daerden (PS), as Mathot and not Daerden had received first place on the list in the elections. Daerden then made fun of Mathot, as he had received the most preferential votes in the constituency of Liège despite being last on the list.

Before and after the federal elections in 2010 Mathot's house was searched on suspicion of corruption.

In June 2018, the Liège criminal court found in proceedings against third parties that Mathot had received a bribe of 700,000 euros. A criminal sentence against him was not possible due to his immunity . Mathot then stated that he did not want to run for the chamber again as mayor. After Mathot left the House of Representatives, the Liège public prosecutor announced in June 2019 that it would initiate another criminal case against him.
