Alan Abbott

Alan Abbott (* 1926 in Birmingham , United Kingdom ) is a British composer and conductor.

Life

Alan Abbott studied at the University of Birmingham , the University of Reading and the Royal College of Music . Here his teachers were Gordon Jacob in orchestration, Richard Austin in conducting and Frank Probin (1888–1981) in the instrumental horn. Abbott has conducted many operettas in London and on tour. In April 1960 he conducted The Merry Widow at the New Oxford Theater . In 1958/59 he was conductor of the Royal Ballet on a tour of Australia and New Zealand. He then became a music producer for the BBC on radio. Here he mainly worked with the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 1965 he left the BBC and became musical director of the Turkish State Ballet. In 1971 he became permanent conductor of the Australian Ballet . He stayed here for five years and then became conductor of the Western Australian Opera and the Western Australian Arts Orchestra . In 1979 he went back to the UK. He was guest conductor at the Paris Opera Ballet , the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Norwegian National Ballet.

  • London Fragments. The work was recorded by the Orchestra Raphaele under the direction of Heinz Hötter and published on the CD A British Light Music Festival on the ASV label.

In addition, he composed various stage music.
