Alan Scholefield (born January 15, 1931 in Cape Town ) is a South African journalist and writer.

Life

Scholefield graduated from Queen's College in Queenstown . Immediately afterwards he began to study at the University of Cape Town ; u. a. English literature . In 1951 Scholefield was able to successfully complete his studies.

He then got a job as a journalist for the English-language daily newspapers The Cape Times and The Cape Argus . During this time he married and also tried to make a name for himself as a writer. Scholefield settled in Spain with his wife and lived there until his divorce in 1960. In addition to his journalistic work, he wrote many stories and essays for English and US magazines during these years.

In 1962 Scholefield married the Australian writer Anthea Goddard and settled in London . There he had his literary breakthrough in 1966 with his debut novel A View of Vultures (The Hyenas).

At present (2012) lives Scholefield along with his wife and three daughters in the county of Hampshire .

reception

In addition to his standalones, Scholefield also published two series of novels. The Marcrae & Silver series is about George Macrae and Leo Silver, two police officers from London. The trilogy Dr. Anne Vernon is about her life and adventures as a prison doctor. In addition, many standalones were created, which were well received by the public as well as by the official literary criticism.

Much praise was given to Scholefield's work The Dark Kingdoms , in which he dealt extensively with the kingdoms of Benin , Congo and Lesotho . Scholefield's work for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) did not have much success . Scholefield also wrote some novels under the pseudonym Lee Jordan .
