The Alaskan pika ( Ochotona collaris ) is a small, about 160 grams heavy, pika . It is the closest relative of the American pika ( O. princeps ), whose range is 800 kilometers from that of the Alaska pika.
features
Alaskan pika are 18-20 centimeters tall. The underside is creamy white, the upper side is gray-brown. The hind legs are only slightly longer than the front legs.
distribution
The Alaskan Pika lives in the scree fields of the mountainous regions of northern British Columbia , Yukon , Alaska, and the western Northwest Territories of Canada .
Way of life
The Alaska Pika lives solitary and does not hibernate . In summer he gathers large amounts of plant material and stows it in pits under stones as winter supplies. He made thousands of collective trips between July and August.
It reaches sexual maturity at one year and the females give birth to two to three young animals once a year. These stay in the nest for up to 30 days until they are weaned and then come to the surface. The young animals then only stay a few days within the rearing area and then look for their own territory .
Hazard and protection
The IUCN lists the Alaska pika as not endangered due to its large distribution area, some of which is far from human influence.
