The Alaska Native Heritage Center is a museum dedicated to Native American culture in Anchorage .

In 1987, the Alaska Federation of Natives , Alaska's largest Native American organization, responded to a request for a meeting place by planning a state-of- the-art cultural center . Almost two years later, this resulted in the Alaska Native Heritage Center as an independent, tax-exempt non-profit organization .

Between 1989 and 1999, federal, state, regional, and private funds raised $ 14.5 million to build the facility. The original plans had provided twice the costs and the project had to be adapted to the available funds.

The building plot was purchased in 1994 and the Heritage Center opened on May 1, 1999.
