The Albany Empire are an arena football team from Albany, New York that plays in the Arena Football League (AFL). The Empire plays its home games in the Times Union Center .
history
The Empire was founded in 2018 and started in the Arena Football League that same year . You are already the third team based in Albany after the very successful Albany Firebirds , who once won the ArenaBowl and the Albany Conquest from af2 .
The founders are your group around George Randolph Hearst III, the CEO of the Times Union , a daily newspaper from Albany, which is the namesake of the multifunctional arena Times Union Center . After the Albany Devils ice hockey club was eliminated in 2017, the arena was not home to a professional sports team for the first time in almost 25 years.
For the first game in franchise history, the Empire received the Philadelphia Soul on April 14, 2018 . The game was lost in front of 13,648 spectators in the sold-out arena with 35:56. Nevertheless, they finished the regular season in first place with 8 wins and 4 losses. In the first playoff round, the Empire lost the second leg against the eventual ArenaBowl winner Washington Valor with 40:47 and were eliminated despite a 57:56 win in the first leg.
In the 2019 season, the Empire were not only first in the regular season with 10 wins and 2 losses, but also ArenaBowl Champion. This makes them the second Albany franchise to win the ArenaBowl alongside the Albany Firebirds in 1999.
